Recent Landmark Study on People Linked Lymphoma and Leukemia with Popular “Diet” Ingredient!

According to a recent study, which was the longest study on aspartame as a carcinogen in humans, only one diet soda a day might increase the risk for developing leukemia, in both men and women. Moreover, it can increase the risk for multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma in men. What is vital is that this is the longest and most comprehensive study on this topic, so it is more relevant than previous studies.

The Most Comprehensive Study

For the requirements of this study, the researchers analyzed data from Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study for 22 years. The number of people who were included is 47,810 men and 77,218 women, the total number 2,278,396 person-years of data. Besides the numbers, this study is different from others because of its thoroughness. Participants answered a very detailed dietary questionnaire once in two years, and they had their diets reevaluated once in four years.

1 Diet Soda per Day Raises the Risk of Developing non-Hodgkin lymphomas, multiple myeloma and leukemia

The study showed that consuming just one can of diet soda can increase the risk of the diseases by:

  • 42% higher risk for leukemia in both women and men
  • 102% higher risk for multiple myeloma
  • 31% higher risk for non-Hodgkin lymphoma in men

The final results were founded on changeable risk models, all compared to candidates who didn’t consume diet soda. The reason only men who drank soda had elevated risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and multiple myeloma is unknown. It is crucial to be aware that diet soda is the greatest source of aspartame, and Americans consume around 5,250 tons of it on a yearly basis, 86 % of which from dietary sodas.

Confirmation of past studies on animals

This recent study shows that quality of research is very important. Nearly all of the past studies do not show link between aspartame and cancer because they have been too inaccurate and too short. This recent study is both long and accurate. The results of this study should not come as a surprise since previous studies on animals (900 rats were observed for the duration of their lifetime) showed very similar results in 2006. Aspartame considerably elevated the risk for lymphomas and leukemia in both males and females. Moreover, a mega-study also showed that after aspartame exposure female rats also had elevated risk of developing breast cancer. This raises an important question if aspartame is also linked with other cancer types like prostate, brain or breast cancer.

This study has shown that you need to stay away from aspartame as much as possible. If you feel tempted to have a sugary soda as an alternative, don’t forget that this study also showed that men consuming sugary sodas had 66% increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It looks like the healthiest thing to do is stop drinking soda.
