Diet Soda’s Worst Fear Coming True: Massive Study Links Aspartame To Major Problems

With a number of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer constantly on the rise, there’s no question modern way of living has seriously affected the health of the nation. Under the influence of contemporary nutritional trends, people turn toward healthier dietary choices more and more. This is the major reason why diet soda is becoming increasingly popular.

However, diet soda is far from healthy as mounting evidence links aspartame (the main sweetener in diet soda) to seizures and a wide array of other health problems.

A recent study conducted over a 10-year period and including 60,000 women found that the risk of cardiovascular disease and death from the disease is significantly higher in women who drink two or more diet drinks on a regular daily basis.

And, that’s not all, as the same study also found that there’s 30% higher risk of heart issues.

The study was done by the University of Iowa and is the largest study examining the side effects of artificial sweeteners on consumers’ health.

The finding were shocking – women who consumed 2-3 diet drinks a day have a 30% higher risk of suffering a heart attack or a stroke and 50% higher probability of dying from a related disease as opposed to women who never or hardly ever consume this type of beverage.

In the words of Dr. Ankur Vyas, the lead researcher, “This is one of the largest studies on this topic, and our findings are consistent with some previous data, especially those linking diet drinks to the metabolic syndrome.”

Aside from diet soda intake, the study also considered other cardiovascular risk factors including body mass index, smoking, hormone therapy use, physical activity, energy intake, salt intake, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and sugar-sweetened beverage intake. Women who consumed two or more diet drinks a day were younger, usually smokers, and had a higher prevalence of diabetes, high blood pressure, and higher BMI.

This study shed new light not only on aspartame, but also on diet soda – the product with the highest aspartame content. This inevitably led to a significant drop in diet soda sales.

As reported by Time Magazine, people are becoming more and more aware of the obesity epidemic in the US and health concerns over sugar-sweetened beverages are on the rise. Even Reuters reports that according to industry experts, the beverage industry is losing its power as a result of this. Diet sodas have also experienced a fall in sales as artificial sweeteners are under serious scrutiny by health experts.

On the other hand, people can choose over a range of much healthier natural sweeteners.
