We usually rub VapoRub under our nose or on our chest when we have stuffy throat or congestion. However, some studies suggest that is a bad idea.
VapoRub and the Problem
Despite the fact that VapoRub is efficient in relieving congestion and soothing sore muscles, it is proven that it can cause much damage as well.
According to studies, VapoRub can lead to respiratory problems, particularly in children. One study suggests that it can lead to an increase of mucus which can then block the air passages.
The big question is how is it possible that an ointment which is supposed to soothe the congestion blocks the air passages?
Behind the Label
It appears that VapoRub contains many ingredients which are known to be harmful for human’s health.
Petroleum
The main ingredient in Vicks VapoRub is petroleum. Petroleum can also be found in a number of everyday products like body lotions, sunscreens, lipstick and Vaseline.
Although it is very popular, this ingredient is a carcinogenic. According to a study which was conducted at Columbia University there are some contaminants in petroleum which increase the risk of breast cancer in women.
Besides, petroleum is an occlusive agent. These agents acts as barriers and they prevent things like air and water from entering the skin. Namely, products based on petroleum block the pores and do not allow the skin to breathe. This can cause pimples and blackheads.
Camphor
This is also a major ingredient in Vicks. Camphor is usually used against colds, for unclogging stuffy noses and relieving coughs. Nevertheless, camphor is toxic.
Everyday Health states that consuming even five milliliters of camphor oil can cause death in children.
Menthol
Menthol is considered to be a beneficial ingredients, but the truth is very different. Mayo Clinic states that Vicks VapoRub does not calm congestion, but because of the menthol smell, your brain is tricked and you have the feeling that you are breathing through your nose, which is still unclogged.
Furthermore, creams based on menthol can have some side-effects, including:
- Hives
- Rash
- Redness and irritation
- Itching
- Difficulty breathing
Well, all points to the fact that Vick VapoRub is detrimental for the health. Fortunately, there is a natural version which can be made in the comfort of your home.
