According to a recent study carried out by the American Institute for Cancer, most cancers can be prevented. Even health experts agree that 60-70% of cancers are preventable through simple dietary and lifestyle changes.
This article focuses on the foods that have repeatedly been linked to cancer. Staying away from these as much as possibly will significantly reduce your risk of this life-threatening disease.
1# GMOs
Genetically modified food has become an inseparable part of modern diet. Unfortunately, numerous studies have linked GMOs to different types of cancer. That’s why it’s in your best interest to look for GMO-free labels on foods and try to avoid GMOs as much as possible.
2# Grilled Meat
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, are the by-product of some types of combustion, burning of coal or wood for instance. What creates an additional problem with grilled meat is that the dripping fat allows for the PAHs to affix themselves to the food prepared which puts you at a higher risk of exposure to carcinogens.
3# Hydrogenated Oils
Hydrogenated oils, or trans-fats, are highly processed oils whose chemical structure has been altered for the purpose of increasing their shelf life. They are chemically extracted from their vegetable or seed source and a number of additives are used to enhance their taste. New research, carried out by a group of experts at the Harvard School of Public Health, discovered that trans fats overwork the immune system leading to inflammation. Aside from a number of chronic diseases, these have also been linked to heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
4# BPA lined cans
Bisphenol-A, widely known as BPA, is commonly used in hard plastics and resins to coat metal cans. A number of lab studies on animals have have linked this ingredient to serious diseases including cancer, infertility, diabetes and obesity. As this chemical substance still hasn’t been banned from use, be aware that unless a canned item is labelled BPA free, it probably contains bisphenol-A (BPA). Moreover, BPA is also used in numerous plastic products and dental composites.
5# Cured and Smoked Foods
These meats are full of nitrates and nitrites, chemicals used as preservatives to prevent food spoilage and enhance meat flavor. Unfortunately, not many know that when these 2 compounds are exposed to high temperatures, they change into by-products called N-nitroso compounds, such as nitrosamines and nitrosamides. Even the World Health Organization confirmed that N-nitroso compounds are highly cancerous.
6# Farmed Fish
Unlike wild salmon, farm-raised salmon packs high levels of chemical pollutants, such as PCB, which is a known carcinogen. Also, fish raised in pools are more exposed to viruses and bacteria due to overcrowding. This only increases the use of antibiotics in the fish diet. According to some experts, farmed fish are also more susceptible to sea lice, meaning they’re also treated with pesticides.
7# Microwave Popcorn
Although extremely popular, microwave popcorn has also been linked to cancer because their packaging is lined with perfluoroalkyls, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) to prevent oil from dripping through. When heated, these chemicals are absorbed into the popcorn and when ingested, these chemicals show up as blood contaminants. In animal studies, PFOA has been linked to tumors in the liver, pancreas, testicles and mammary glands in rats, and a high risk of prostate cancer in PFOA plant workers.
8# Soy Protein Isolate
Mounting evidence confirms that 90-95% of soybean grown in the US, which is used for the production of soy protein isolate, has been genetically modified to survive herbicides. According to the American Dietetic Association, soy protein isolates have been found to contain anti-nutrients that seriously affect digestion and the body’s absorption of nutrients. It’s also important to mention that soy undergoes a highly industrial manufacturing process of acid washing in aluminum tanks. Aluminum can severely hamper proper nervous system and kidney function.
9# Non Organic Fruits & Vegetables
It’s widely known that conventionally grown crops are treated with different pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals, all of which are harmful to health.
10# Processed foods
Processed foods are high in nitrites and nitrates, which, when consumed in abundance, increase a person’s risk of stomach and other cancers. These foods are also loaded with other unhealthy ingredients such as white flours, sugars, oils, colors, and additives.
11# Refined Sugars
According to health experts, there’s a close link between sugar and a number of health issues such as unhealthy blood fat levels, low HDL levels, higher risk for heart disease, higher blood triglyceride levels, obesity, immune suppression, arthritis and many more. Also, it has been medically proved that cancer cells thrive on sugar.
12# White Flour
As mentioned above, conventionally grown grains are treated with fungicide, sprayed with pesticides and stored in bins coated with insecticides after harvest. Grains then undergo high-temperature thermal processing and high-speed rollers. Chlorine oxide in the form of a chlorine gas bath is used as a whitener, as well as a ripening agent. The end product is starch depleted of nutrients but high in toxins.
13# Soda/ Sports Drinks
It has been said times and again that sodas and sports drinks have no nutritional value. On the other hand, these drinks are full of fructose corn syrup, sugar, dyes, brominated vegetable oil, aspartame and other chemicals. And, that’s not all – these additives deplete your body of essential vitamins and minerals.
14# Sugar
It has been scientifically confirmed that cancer cells thrive on sugar and any food that converts to sugar, such as grains, pastas, carbs, breads and most fruits. That’s why cancer patients are strongly advised to cut out their sugar intake.
