Anxiety has become a very serious and quite common problem in America. Approximately 18% of the population, or 40 million people are affected by it. Anxiety can be caused by a number of factors, including brain chemistry, genetics, life events and personality. People who are afflicted with anxiety know that it can be pretty debilitating. The feelings of loss of control, fear and dread can have an effect on almost every aspect of the life of a person. Anxiety disorders dramatically decrease the quality of life for many people. Many people who suffer from anxiety choose to take prescribed medication. Moreover, some people try massage, meditation, yoga and other relaxation techniques. Different approaches have different effects on different people. However, some neuroscientists from the U.K. have come to the discovery that there is a song which is able to reduce anxiety by 65%. Can you guess the song?
Anxiety and Music Therapy
Scientist at Mindlab International in the U.K. did a research on the type of music which promotes the greatest state of relaxation. During this study, participants had to solve different puzzles. Certain degree of stress was triggered, depending on how difficult the task was. There were sensors which were connected to the participants and they measured the stress levels. Also, the participants listened to various songs. The scientists measured the breathing rate, blood pressure, heart rate and brain activity.
It was concluded that certain song decreases anxiety by 65%. Moreover, there was also a 35% decrease in the physiological resting rates. “Weightless” is the title of the song. Marconi Union designed this song in order to promote a very relaxed state. Sound therapists and musicians teamed up to arrange certain bass lines, rhythms and harmonies. The objective was to create music which is going to slow down the heart rate and the blood pressure of the listener, and will also reduce the stress hormones.
Researchers discovered that this song was that effective that most of the females who participated in the study became drowsy. Because of this, you shouldn’t listen to this song while driving.
The Increase of Anxiety Disorders
This increase is probably due to technology. Because of social media, tweens, teenagers and even adults can compare their lives with the lives of other people. Everything from weight, body shape, beauty, relationships and wealth can easily be found out. According to research, people who compare themselves with other people can easily become depressed.
Nowadays, students feel notably more emotionally fragile, unstable and more isolated than students in the past. Also, teenagers are more likely to be dissatisfied with life, have low self-esteem, and be self-absorbed. A number of researchers think that the increase of anxiety disorders and other mental problems has everything to do with the way youngsters view the world.
In case you are afflicted with anxiety, music therapy could be of a great help. Watch the following video and listen to Weightless.
