Graying hair is a common cosmetic issue for both men and women. Gray hair is normally linked to aging because melanin secretion by the hair follicles decreases with age; this makes hair lose its natural color and turn gray. However, today more and more people seem to be affected with premature graying.
To deal with this cosmetic issue, which can seriously undermine a person’s self-esteem, most people turn to commercial hair dyes. But, these are often loaded with chemicals that irritate the scalp and even lead to hair loss, especially if used regularly.
On the other hand, there are a number of natural recipes that are extremely effective in preventing premature graying. One of our favorites is the recipe below.
ONION JUICE
Directions:
Start by peeling and juicing the onions. You can use a food processor, a blender, a grater or a juicer for this. Apply the juice onto your scalp massaging gently. Let it act for at least 15 minutes or longer if you aren’t in a hurry. Rinse it off then wash your hair as usual.
Onion juice is rich in the enzyme catalase. People have used it for centuries as a topical treatment and home remedy for grey hair. Herbalists have been advising their patients to rub onions on their scalps so that they can cure grey hair long before any hair dyes were ever invented!
ADDITIONAL TIPS
1# Get More Vitamins
Vitamin B12 is essential for proper secretion of melanin, the pigment that gives hair its natural color. That’s why it’s important to enrich your diet with complex B vitamins as well as vitamin A; this will stimulate the hair follicle to produce more melanin. The best food sources of vitamins B and A include green leafy vegetables and fruits. Good sources of B vitamins also include banana, cauliflower, tomato, yogurt and cereals. Vitamin B12 is found in dairy products, eggs and meat.
2# Use Henna
Instead of using chemical-laden commercial dyes, opt for Henna, which is far more beneficial. Apply on your hair and scalp one hour before having a shower. This natural hair product not only restores hair color, but it also nourishes the hair follicles.
3# Eat Iodine-Rich Food
Iodine is highly beneficial for preventing hair graying. It’s found in seafood, but also in bananas and carrots. Substituting ordinary table salt with iodine salt will also increase your iodine intake.
4# Avoid Stress and Unhealthy Lifestyle
Last, but not least, continual exposure to stress and leading unhealthy lifestyle can greatly contribute to premature graying. Eliminate stress and unhealthy habits such as drinking and smoking. Take up meditation as an effective method to release tension and relax.
